As a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor you can but if you prefer to take a slower step then you can begin with the PADI Assistant Instructor Course.

The PADI Assistant Instructor Course at Calypso’s 5 Star IDC Center, Boracay, Philippines prepares you to be proceed to the next level which is the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course. It further develops your leadership and teaching abilities to the instructor level and prepares you to teach PADI programs. The IDC is intense, enjoyable, demanding and exciting all at the same time. When you complete the IDC, you will have been trained and prepared to successfully attend the PADI Instructor Examination (IE). Candidates have fun, make new friends, and share rewarding life experiences while earning some of the most desirable credentials in the dive industry.

What Are The Prerequisites To Join?

  1. 18 years old.
  2. Certified diver for at least 6 months.
  3. Dive Leader certification — PADI Divemaster or Leadership Level Certification with a recognised Recreational Diver Training Organisation (if not a PADI Divemaster, complete the PADI Divemaster Course Rescue Diver Skills Assessment).
  4. 60 Logged Dives With Experience In Deep, Navigation & Night Diving. 
  5. EFR Primary and Secondary Care Course Completion (or qualifying training) within the last 24 months.
  6. Submit documentation of qualifying Certifications for Entry Level, Advanced, Rescue and Leadership Level, as necessary.
  7. Medical Clearance Attesting To Dive Fitness signed by a Physician within the previous 12 months.

2. Participate in the following curriculum components with a PADI Course Director & Staffs:

  • Orientation
  • PADI System Workshop
  • Learning & Teaching Workshop
  • Discover Scuba Diving Workshop
  • Skills Development Workshop
  • Risk Management & Licensing Workshop
  • Knowledge Development Presentation Workshop
  • Confined Water Training Workshop
  • Open Water Training Workshop

3. Present two Knowledge Development Teaching Presentations, scoring a minimum of 3.5 on at least two.

4. Present two Confined Water Teaching Presentations, scoring a minimum of 3.4 on at least two.

5. Present two Integrated (Two Skills) Open Water Teaching Presentations, scoring a minimum of 3.4 on at least one integrated presentation.

  • At least one set of skills from the PADI Open Water Diver Course.
  • At least one set of skills from the Peak Performance Buoyancy Course.

6. Perform all 24 dive and skin dive skills in the Skill Evaluation, scoring a minimum of 82 total points, with no individual score below 3.

7. Score 75 percent on the PADI Systems, Standards and Procedures Exam and have any missed questions reviewed until mastery is achieved. Retest candidates scoring less than 75 percent.

8. Score 75 percent on all sections of the Dive Theory Exam and have any missed questions reviewed until mastery is achieved. Retest candidates scoring less than 75 percent.

9. In open water, demonstrate with role-model quality the rescue of a simulated unresponsive, non-breathing diver at the surface.

How long does it take?

The standard PADI Assistant Instructor Course takes about 3days but to better equipped candidates with better learning environment and prepare them for the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course and eventually the PADI Instructor Examination, the PADI Assistant Instructor Course is 4days. After successfully met the Performance Requirements of the PADI Assistant Instructor Course, candidates will be eligible to proceed to the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course and attend a 2days PADI Instructor Examination conducted by PADI Instructor Examiner before certification as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

What you can do as a PADI Assistant Instructor?

  1. Present the knowledge development elaboration for any PADI Diver course under the instructor’s indirect supervision. The instructor personally assesses student knowledge development.
  2. Present initial skills training under the instructor’s direct supervision during confined water dives.
  3. Conduct open water surface skill evaluations during Open Water Diver course dives under the instructor’s indirect supervision.
  4. Teach and certify Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Divers under the direction of an instructor.
  5. Independently teach the Project AWARE (nondiving) Specialty course.
  6. Independently teach the Coral Reef Conservation (nondiving) Specialty course.
  7. Independently conduct Discover Scuba Diving in a pool or confined water.
  8. Independently conduct Bubblemaker programs.
  9. Independently conduct PADI Seal Team AquaMissions.
  10. Teach and certify divers in specialty courses that don’t include dives after completing Specialty Instructor Training courses and earning SpecialtyInstructor ratings for such specialties.
  11. After completing the corresponding instructor training and earning Specialty Instructor ratings, conduct Digital Underwater Photographer specialty courses under the direction of a PADI Instructor.
